The Circulatory System and the Heart
The heart is a special type of muscle. It beats all the time, without stopping. It acts like a pump, sending blood around the body through the blood vessels. The contraction of the heart is called systole and the relaxation is called diastole.
The heart is divided into two halves.
- There are two chambers on the right: the right atrium and the right ventricle. They are joined by a valve that only allows blood to flow in one direction, from the atrium to the ventricle.
- There are two chambers on the left: the left atrium and the left ventricle. They are also joined by a valve that only allows blood to flow from the atrium to the ventricle.
